Program Director Credential Courses

The Vermont Early Childhood and Afterschool Program Director Credential offers a three-step sequence of college courses for directors or administrators in the field, and for those aspiring to these roles. Higher education courses from any accredited higher education institution may be approved to complete the coursework requirements, as long as they address the required content. Many of these courses are currently offered through the Vermont State Colleges system, and are offered both face-to-face and online. Competencies for Early Child and Afterschool Program Directors are embedded into the coursework for this credential.

College course work must relate to the age range (early childhood or afterschool) of the program where the candidate works.  The six course topic areas that support the Program Director Credential include:

  • Child Development ( or Infant Toddler Development, or Development of the Young Child Ages 3-8)
  • Curriculum Development in Early Childhood Education or Afterschool
  • Program Management in Early Childhood and Afterschool Programs
  • Human Resources Management
  • Leadership, Mentoring and Supervision in Early Childhood and Afterschool Programs
  • Culminating Seminar in Early Childhood and Afterschool Programs (required for credential)

Many of the courses are also contracted by the Vermont Child Care Industry and Careers Council, and so are offered at low cost to eligible students.  These courses are also listed in Bright Futures Information System (BFIS) course calendar.   (Note: course dates are listed by when the course starts.)

The Side Bar on this page includes a list of courses that meet the credential requirements, which are being offered in the coming semester.
