Exploring the Profession of Early Childhood Education  (I credit, online)
Classes from May 20 – May 31, with the following two weeks devoted to completing final papers and/or projects. COST: one credit through UVM

The field of early childhood education is diverse and dynamic, typically covering the ages of birth – 8. This 1 credit online course will explore early childhood philosophical perspectives and pedagogical approaches, and guide the student through a personal exploration of career opportunities, goal setting and resume building. Students will:
~ examine their educational beliefs through the construction of a philosophy statement;
 ~ research the profession and career opportunities in the state of Vermont, nationally and internationally;
~ construct career goals ~ develop an action plan and timeline
~ write a resume and explore job searching strategies

 Play is a core resource of childhood, supporting children’s social, emotional and intellectual development. Utilizing video from early childhood classrooms, this session considers:

• the theory and research on how play promotes learning
• how teachers can support children’s learning through play, including consideration of when and how adults should intervene in play
• connections between play and other parts of the curriculum
• dealing with aggression in play
• how Vivian Paley’s approach to storytelling/story acting can influence play
• ways early childhood professionals can advocate for children’s right to play

B) FALL:  Afterschool programs coaches and  adult instructors  needed : 2013-14 ISS-AP Coaching Opportunity

 The Vermont Center for Afterschool Excellence is currently seeking ISS-AP (Individualized System of Support for Afterschool Programs) coaches for the 2013-14 school year.  ISS-AP coaches work with afterschool directors and leaders around topic areas of interest to the afterschool field in year-long (or half-year) strands.  ISS-AP strands encompass both group workshops/ trainings and individualized coaching.  Topics of particular interest include: middle school and high school programming, STEM, personalized learning, Common Core Standards, program evaluation, and family engagement.  Individuals with expertise in these areas are encouraged to submit a proposal, and all other topics of relevance to afterschool professions will also be considered.
