This certificate is issued by the Vermont Child Care Industry and Careers Council (VCCICC) and the Vermont Department of Labor. It is for entry level staff working in early childhood or afterschool programs. OJT participants document 1000 hours of work and 45 hours of training over 1-3 years.
OJT enables new staff working in regulated afterschool programs to combine their work and training to become learning experiences. Participants in OJT
- document 1,000 hours of work
- complete 45 hours of training specific to the five core competency areas
- complete CPR and First Aide
- Basic Specialized Care Training.
Participants get monetary incentives along the way. It typically takes 1-3 years to complete the program.

The Vermont Northern Lights Career Development Center works with many partners to unify and enhance the professional development system for early childhood and afterschool professionals in Vermont. It is funded by a grant from the Child Development Division of the Vermont Agency of Human Services. The Community College of Vermont (CCV) and the Vermont Child Care Industry and Careers Council (VCCICC) are co-grantees.
